Asbestos-related diseases
Asbestos exposure can cause several distinct diseases, typically 10 to 50 years after the exposure occurred. Each page below summarises what the condition is, how it is diagnosed, and how Canadian workers' compensation and civil claims typically treat it.
Mesothelioma
A rare cancer of the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart, almost exclusively caused by asbestos.
Lung cancer
Asbestos exposure meaningfully increases lung-cancer risk, especially in smokers.
Asbestosis
A chronic lung disease from inhaling asbestos fibres, causing scarring and breathing difficulty.
Pleural disease
Thickening, plaques, and effusions of the pleura, often the earliest visible sign of exposure.
Laryngeal cancer
Recognised by IARC as caused by asbestos exposure; often overlooked in claims.
Ovarian cancer
Emerging occupational-exposure link recognised by IARC and health agencies.

Your province matters more than you think
In Canada, most asbestos-disease compensation flows through provincial workers' compensation boards, each with different rules, benefit schedules, and deadlines. Some claims also involve trust funds set up by bankrupt asbestos manufacturers, or civil claims against employers or product manufacturers.
Deadlines apply to asbestos claims
Provincial workers' compensation boards and civil courts each have limitation periods. If you or a family member has been diagnosed, don't wait to look into your options.
