Editorial policy
How we research, source, review, and correct the information on this site.
Primary sources
Our default sources, in rough order of use:
- Canadian government and Crown agencies: Health Canada, Public Health Agency of Canada, Statistics Canada, provincial workers' compensation boards (WorkSafeBC, WCB Alberta, WSIB, CNESST and others), Veterans Affairs Canada.
- Canadian medical bodies: Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), Canadian Medical Association Journal, provincial cancer agencies.
- Canadian occupational-exposure research: CAREX Canada, Institute for Work & Health.
- International references where they are the authoritative source: IARC Monographs, World Health Organization, US National Cancer Institute (for treatment mechanics only).
- Trust fund documents: each trust's published Trust Distribution Procedure, obtained from US federal court (PACER) records or from the Delaware Claims Processing Facility.
What we do not use
- Marketing pages of US law firms (they are commonly cited by AI-generated pages we've reviewed, and their figures do not apply to Canada).
- Anonymous message-board case studies or advocacy sites without underlying primary sources.
- Anecdotes we cannot verify.
Case studies and testimonials
We do not publish invented case studies, invented testimonials, or invented settlement figures. Where we reference a real reported case (for example, a Supreme Court of Canada decision), we cite the case name, citation, and a link.
Dating and review
Every content page carries a "last reviewed" date. When we substantively update a page, we update the date and note the change here. Medical pages are re-reviewed at least once every 12 months.
Medical review
Where a page discusses diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment mechanics, we intend to have it reviewed by a Canadian occupational-health or oncology professional and to name the reviewer on the page. Pages that have not yet been medically reviewed carry a visible note stating that.
