Vermiculite & Zonolite insulation in Canadian homes
Vermiculite attic insulation is not itself asbestos, but a huge proportion sold in Canada came from a single mine that was heavily contaminated with amphibole asbestos. Here's how to identify it and what to do.
The short version: If your Canadian home has loose, pebbly, gold-brown, silver-grey, or gunmetal-coloured attic insulation, it may be vermiculite, and if it was installed before the mid-1990s, it is likely to be Zonolite-brand vermiculite from the W.R. Grace mine in Libby, Montana, which was contaminated with tremolite-actinolite asbestos.
Health Canada's guidance: if the material is undisturbed and sealed off from your living space, leaving it in place is the lowest-risk option. Do not sweep, vacuum, or disturb it for any reason. Test before any renovation, wiring, or plumbing work in the attic.
What is vermiculite?
Vermiculite is a naturally occurring mineral that expands dramatically when heated, producing lightweight pebble-like particles. It is not itself asbestos. Expanded vermiculite has been used as attic and wall insulation, as a soil amendment, and as a filler in fireproofing products since the 1920s.
Not all vermiculite is asbestos-contaminated. The problem is specific to a particular mine.
The Libby, Montana problem
From roughly 1919 to 1990, the W.R. Grace mine near Libby, Montana produced up to 80% of the world's vermiculite. It was sold under the brand name Zonolite in Canada and the United States. The Libby deposit was naturally contaminated with a highly toxic amphibole asbestos (tremolite-actinolite series) that was never separated from the vermiculite before sale.
Because Libby dominated the market for so long, Health Canada estimates that a significant proportion of vermiculite installed in Canadian homes before the mid-1990s originated from Libby and is likely contaminated. Canadian imports of Libby vermiculite continued through the 1980s.
How to identify vermiculite in your attic
Vermiculite looks distinctive and is unlike modern fibreglass or cellulose insulation:
- Colour: gold-brown, silver-grey, or gunmetal-grey. Sometimes greenish when new.
- Shape: loose, pebble-like flakes, roughly the size of a pea or corn kernel. Layered "accordion" appearance up close.
- Texture: lightweight, dry, crumbles slightly under pressure.
- Where it lives: most commonly loose-fill in unfinished attics; also blown into wall cavities.
- What it is not: pink or yellow (fibreglass batts), white/grey shredded paper (cellulose), or dense continuous foam (polyurethane).
Do not go up into the attic to check, and do not disturb anything to inspect it. Look through the attic hatch or take a photo from the top of the attic ladder. If in doubt, hire a professional.
Why it's a problem
Tremolite and actinolite are amphibole asbestos, and amphibole asbestos is the type most strongly associated with mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung diseases. Even small disturbances of contaminated vermiculite, running a wire, adding plumbing, opening a hatch on a windy day, can release fibres that then settle into the living space below.
The people at greatest historical risk have been:
- Homeowners who disturbed vermiculite doing DIY renovations.
- Electricians, plumbers, and cable installers who worked in vermiculite attics without PPE.
- Renovation contractors who removed vermiculite without proper controls.
- Anyone who lived with disturbed or damaged vermiculite over a long period.

What to do if you find vermiculite
- Do not disturb it. Stay out of the attic. Do not sweep it up, vacuum it, or attempt any DIY removal.
- Seal the attic hatch. Weatherstrip the hatch so airflow between the attic and living space is minimised.

- Cancel any planned attic work until the test result is in, wiring runs, plumbing, insulation top-ups, HVAC changes.
- Positive result? Consider whether removal is actually needed. If the vermiculite is contained, undisturbed, and unlikely to be disturbed, most guidance is to leave it in place. If you plan to renovate, sell the home, or the vermiculite is exposed to the living space, hire a provincially-licensed abatement contractor.

If you may already have been exposed
Some Canadians, particularly renovation contractors, insulators, and homeowners who did DIY work in vermiculite attics, already had significant exposure before the risk was widely known.
