Privacy policy
How AsbestosExposure.ca collects, uses, and shares personal information, including sensitive health information you provide through our eligibility questionnaire.
Who this policy applies to
AsbestosExposure.ca ("we," "us") is an independent Canadian information resource. This policy applies to personal information you provide through the site, including through our eligibility questionnaire and contact form, and to information we collect automatically when you visit the site.
We are a Canadian organisation and we follow the requirements of the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the applicable provincial equivalents.
Information you give us
Depending on what you choose to send us, we may collect:
- Contact details: name, email, phone number, and the province you live in.
- Exposure information: the industries you worked in, when, and where; whether you had secondary exposure through a family member; whether you served in the military.
- Health information: whether you have been diagnosed with an asbestos-related disease, and what your symptoms are.
- Anything else you choose to write in the "additional information" field.
Health and diagnosis information is sensitive personal information under PIPEDA. We treat it accordingly.
Information we collect automatically
When you visit the site we automatically receive standard web-server information: your IP address, your browser and device type, the page you arrived from, and the pages you view. We may use analytics tools (such as a Canadian-hosted analytics service) that record this information in aggregate to help us improve the site. Analytics data does not include your health or exposure information.
How we use the information
We use the information you send us to:
- Reply to your enquiry.
- With your consent, share your questionnaire answers with an independent Canadian lawyer in our network who handles asbestos and mesothelioma claims, so that they can contact you for an initial consultation.
- Understand which content is helpful (aggregated analytics only).
- Meet our legal obligations.
Who we share it with
We share personal information with:
- An independent Canadian law firm you have consented to be matched with. If you submit the eligibility questionnaire and consent to being matched, we share your answers with one Canadian law firm that handles asbestos and mesothelioma cases. That firm may then contact you.
- Our service providers (for example, our email host and analytics provider), under contracts that require them to protect the information and use it only on our instructions.
- Anyone we are legally required to share it with (for example, in response to a valid court order).
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with lead marketplaces or advertising networks that could resell it.
Your consent
Submitting a form on the site is your consent for us to use the information as described above. You can withdraw consent at any time by emailing info@asbestosexposure.ca. Withdrawing consent may mean we can't respond to a previously-submitted enquiry.
How long we keep it
Enquiries and questionnaire submissions are retained for as long as we need them to reply and to answer follow-up questions, and thereafter for a limited period (typically 24 months) for record-keeping. You can ask us to delete your information sooner, see below.
Your rights (PIPEDA)
You have the right to:
- Know what personal information we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Ask us to delete your information.
- Withdraw consent to further use.
- Complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if you are not satisfied with our response.
To exercise any of these rights, email info@asbestosexposure.ca. We respond within 30 days.
Security
Our website is served over HTTPS. Form submissions are transmitted over an encrypted connection. We limit access to personal information to people who need it to do their job. No system is perfectly secure; if you believe your information has been compromised, please email us immediately.
Children
AsbestosExposure.ca is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child, please contact us and we will delete it.
Cookies
We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies to keep the site working and to measure aggregate traffic. We do not use advertising cookies to track you across other websites. Your browser can block cookies at any time; the site will continue to work.
