Asbestos testing in Canada, explained

When to test, what samples labs need, how much it costs, and how to read the result. Written for Canadian homeowners, workers, and families.

Do not disturb suspected asbestos to collect a sample unless you know how to do it safely. Improperly sampling a material can release fibres and make the exposure worse. In most Canadian provinces, a certified asbestos professional or occupational hygienist can collect samples for you for $75-$200 per sample.

Why anyone tests for asbestos

You cannot tell whether a material contains asbestos by looking at it. Asbestos was used in more than 3,000 building products between the 1930s and the late 1980s, and residues remain in millions of Canadian homes and workplaces. The only way to know is to send a sample to a laboratory that examines it under a microscope.

People test in four common situations:

  • Before a renovation, demolition, or repair in a building built before 1990. In every Canadian province, disturbing asbestos-containing material without proper controls is a workplace safety offence.
  • After a discovery, you or a contractor peeled back a wall or opened an attic and found something suspicious (vermiculite, popcorn ceiling, textured plaster, old floor tiles, pipe wrap).
  • After a leak, flood, or fire in an older building that may have released fibres.
  • To confirm past occupational exposure for a workers' compensation claim, usually air or dust samples collected at a former worksite or on stored equipment. This one is best handled by a professional hygienist working with your lawyer.

What is actually in a sample

Labs look for six fibres regulated as asbestos: chrysotile (white), amosite (brown), crocidolite (blue), tremolite, actinolite, and anthophyllite. Chrysotile makes up more than 90% of Canadian asbestos use historically; amosite and crocidolite appear in insulation and some industrial products. Vermiculite attic insulation (particularly Zonolite-brand) is a special case: it is not itself asbestos, but a large proportion of Zonolite sold in Canada was contaminated with tremolite-actinolite fibres from the Libby, Montana mine that supplied it.

The three sample types

Different questions need different samples. A lab needs enough material and the right kind of material to give a defensible answer.

Bulk sample

A small physical piece of the material itself, drywall joint compound, popcorn ceiling texture, vinyl floor tile, pipe wrap, vermiculite insulation, roof shingle. Usually 1-2 grams (about a tablespoon).

Best for: answering "does this material contain asbestos?" before a renovation.

Analysis: Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), sometimes with a follow-up TEM on low-percentage results.

Air sample

A calibrated pump pulls a measured volume of air through a filter cassette over several hours. The filter is then examined for airborne fibres.

Best for: post-abatement clearance testing, workplace exposure monitoring, and confirming that fibre levels are below occupational limits.

Analysis: Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM) counts all fibres; Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) is needed to prove those fibres are asbestos.

Dust / settled sample

Settled dust wiped or vacuumed from a surface using a specialised cassette. Provides a picture of past contamination even after airborne levels have dropped.

Best for: checking for lingering contamination after an event, or evaluating whether an occupant may have been exposed.

Analysis: almost always TEM, because sensitivity is critical.

How labs analyse the samples

The three standard microscopy methods each answer a different question. Ask the lab which method they will use and why, a reputable lab will explain in one sentence.

Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM)

The default first-line method for bulk samples. A trained analyst uses a light microscope with polarising filters to identify asbestos fibres by their optical properties and estimate the percentage of the sample that is asbestos. Reporting limit is typically about 1%. Fast (24-48 hours), inexpensive ($25-$50 per sample in Canada), and adequate for most homeowner questions.

Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM)

Used for air samples in occupational-hygiene settings. Counts all fibres above a size threshold; cannot distinguish asbestos from other fibrous materials such as fibreglass or gypsum. PCM results are compared against provincial occupational exposure limits, for example, WorkSafeBC and CSA Z94.4 use 0.1 fibres/cc as the 8-hour exposure limit.

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)

The most sensitive and expensive method. TEM identifies individual asbestos fibres by shape, chemistry, and crystal structure. Required for post-abatement clearance in most Canadian public buildings and schools, for dust analysis, and for low-percentage bulk confirmations. Typical Canadian pricing: $120-$250 per sample; turnaround 3-10 business days depending on lab and priority level.

You will also see two lab reporting frameworks referenced in reports: EPA-600 (a US Environmental Protection Agency method suite for bulk PLM/TEM analysis) and ISO 14966 (the international standard for TEM analysis of ambient air). Canadian labs typically follow these methods and are audited against them.

A mail-in home test kit is the simplest way for a Canadian homeowner to get a PLM result on a bulk sample. The kit ships with instructions, a sealable bag, and a prepaid return envelope. You take a small sample (or hire a professional to do it), send it in, and receive a lab-issued PDF report by email in 3-5 business days.

If you insist on collecting the sample yourself

We strongly recommend hiring a certified asbestos professional. If you cannot, follow every step below. Do not skip any of them; the point is to avoid releasing fibres.

  1. Turn off any HVAC that could move air past the sample area. Close doors.
  2. Wear disposable coveralls, N95 or P100 respirator, safety glasses, and nitrile gloves. A cheap dust mask is not adequate.
  3. Wet the sample area lightly with a spray bottle of water and a drop of dish soap. This keeps fibres from becoming airborne.
  4. Cut or scrape a small piece (about 1-2 grams) into a heavy-duty resealable bag. Label the bag with the room, material description, and date.
  5. Seal the sampled area with duct tape or a patch of paint before removing your PPE.
  6. Bag your gloves, coveralls, and any wipes, then seal that bag inside a second bag for disposal per your municipality's hazardous-material instructions.
  7. Ship the sample to a CALA-accredited lab (see the next section) using their instructions. Most accept sealed samples by regular mail or courier.

Do not attempt to sample sprayed-on fireproofing, thermal system insulation, floor tile mastic, or vermiculite attic insulation yourself. The disturbance risk is too high; hire a professional.

Choosing a lab

The single most important thing to check is accreditation. In Canada, the recognised accreditation body for asbestos-testing laboratories is the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA) . CALA-accredited labs meet ISO/IEC 17025, which is what any workers' compensation board, court, or insurance adjuster expects.

Ask any lab you're considering:

  • Are you CALA-accredited or ISO/IEC 17025 accredited for asbestos analysis specifically?
  • Which method will you use for my sample type (PLM, PCM, or TEM)?
  • What is your reporting limit for that method?
  • What is standard turnaround, and what does rush cost?
  • Is the sample analysed in Canada, and if not, where?
  • Can you provide a defensible report suitable for a WCB or insurance claim, if needed?

A one-line "yes" to the first two questions is enough. If a lab hesitates or cannot name its accreditation, use a different lab.

Reading a lab report

A typical Canadian asbestos-testing report includes:

  • Sample identification, the label you wrote on the bag, echoed back so you can match it to the room.
  • Method used, PLM, PCM, or TEM, and the specific method reference (e.g. EPA/600/R-93/116).
  • Result, either "none detected" or a list of asbestos types found with an estimated percentage or fibre concentration.
  • Detection / reporting limit, below this, the lab cannot confirm asbestos is absent. For PLM, typical reporting limit is 1%; for TEM, much lower.
  • Analyst signature and lab accreditation number.

A common mistake: seeing "less than 1%" on a PLM result and assuming that means safe. It means PLM can't rule asbestos out to a lower threshold. For high-stakes decisions (renovation clearance, occupational-exposure claim), a TEM follow-up is standard.

You got a positive result. Now what?

A positive result on a home sample is not an emergency. Undisturbed, most asbestos-containing materials (vinyl flooring, roofing, siding, pipe cement) pose little immediate risk. The risk arises when the material is cut, sanded, drilled, broken, or removed without controls.

  • Do not disturb the material. Cancel any DIY plans that involve cutting, drilling, or removing it.
  • Hire a licensed asbestos abatement contractor if the material must be removed. "Licensed" means licensed under the applicable provincial workers' compensation and occupational-health legislation, not just holding a general contractor licence.
  • Confirm the contractor's notification. In most provinces, abatement contractors must notify the workers' compensation board before starting. Ask to see the notification reference number.
  • Insist on post-abatement clearance air testing (TEM) before letting anyone re-occupy the area.
